The event of the week
Meta Platforms: Q3 2026 results
Wednesday 21 October · 22:30 (16:30 NY)
A high-index-sensitivity event given Meta's weight. Watch advertising revenue, impressions and pricing, margins, capex and AI investment, Reality Labs and guidance. Broad growth with firm margins and guidance would be the strongest mix; in-line figures would shift focus to capex; deceleration, higher costs or weak guidance would weigh more.

Residential construction: September housing starts and permits
A gauge of housing supply and construction-linked activity. Starts and permits above the prior month, with single-family improvement, would suggest stronger momentum; near-prior readings would be steady; a broad decline, especially in permits, would point to a softer future pipeline. These are volatile annualized rates.

September pending home sales
A leading indicator of existing-home transactions. Growth above the prior reading would reinforce demand stabilization; a near-prior result would be neutral; renewed contraction would suggest affordability and mortgage rates remain constraints. Regional details and revisions matter.

NextEra Energy: Q3 2026 results and call
A benchmark for utilities and renewables. Watch adjusted earnings, project execution, financing, power demand and guidance. Growth backed by execution and maintained guidance would be firmer; in-line figures would keep financing in focus; delays, higher costs or a guidance cut would be weaker.
EarningsUS - (13:00 NY)
20-year Treasury bond reopening
A test of long-duration demand. A favorable stop versus the market, solid bid-to-cover, high indirects and low dealer absorption would be a firmer mix; metrics near recent auctions would be mixed; a weak stop, low indirects or elevated dealer takedown would require more concession. Interpretation depends on the when-issued level immediately before the auction.

IBM: Q3 2026 results
A benchmark for enterprise software, consulting and infrastructure. Watch software growth, Red Hat, consulting signings, margins, cash flow and guidance. Diversified acceleration and firm guidance would be stronger; in-line figures would leave focus on backlog; consulting or cash-flow weakness and a guidance cut would be negative.
EarningsUS - (17:30 NY)
Tesla: Q3 2026 results and webcast
A key event for autos, growth and retail sentiment. Watch automotive margin excluding credits, pricing and incentives, inventory, cash flow, energy, capex and outlook. Better margins and cash flow with credible guidance would be firmer; in-line figures would shift focus to commentary; margin pressure, inventory or capex without operating support would weaken the read.

Weekly jobless claims
A high-frequency labor-market reading. Fewer claims than the prior report would suggest limited layoffs; a similar result would preserve stability; a persistent increase alongside higher continuing claims would indicate cooling. A single week can be affected by seasonality and revisions.

What it means and what it affects
How many people filed for unemployment benefits for the first time last week. It is the most frequent labour reading there is.
Its value is the frequency: weekly, so it catches a turn in the labour market weeks before any monthly release. It rarely moves markets on its own; what moves markets is its trend.
If it comes in above
More claims point to a deteriorating labour market and support bonds.
If it comes in below
Fewer claims confirm a labour market that is holding.
The catch: It is noisy week to week. Look at the four-week average, not the single print — and holiday and back-to-school weeks get distorted by seasonal adjustment.

5-year Treasury TIPS auction
A test of demand for inflation protection and intermediate real duration. A favorable stop, solid bid-to-cover and indirects, and low dealer takedown would be firmer; results near recent auctions would be mixed; a demanding real yield, low indirects or high dealers would be weaker. The breakeven should be read alongside the equivalent nominal Treasury.

S&P Global October flash PMIs
The first broad read on October private-sector activity. Readings above the prior month with firm new orders and employment would reinforce expansion; near-prior results would preserve pace; a clear decline, especially toward 50, would indicate slowing. Price components help distinguish strong growth from inflation pressure.

University of Michigan consumer sentiment: final October reading
The final revision to consumer confidence and inflation expectations. An upward sentiment revision with stable or lower inflation expectations would be a more favorable mix; small changes would confirm the preliminary reading; weaker confidence and higher inflation expectations would be less comfortable. Revisions to current conditions and expectations matter.

What it means and what it affects
How households rate their current situation and the months ahead, by survey.
It leads consumption: what people say today about their future anticipates what they will spend. The Michigan survey also includes expected inflation, which the Fed watches because expectations feed on themselves.
If it comes in above
More optimistic households point to sustained consumption.
If it comes in below
A collapse in confidence usually precedes a spending stop.
The catch: What people say and what they do often diverge. Confidence can be on the floor while spending stays firm for months.
